Board of Directors

On July 1, 2008, Michael R. Brenan was named Chairman of the United Way of the Midlands Board of Directors.  The Board consists of 36 business and community leaders from Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, Newberry, Orangeburg and Calhoun counties.
He also serves as Chairman of the Board for the United Way Association of South Carolina and the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities.  He is the former Chairman of the Board of the South Carolina Bankers Association and the EdVenture Children's Museum.  He is also a board member of the South Carolina School for Science and Mathematics, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, BIPEC, and The Central Carolina Foundation.  He is Governor Sanford's business appointee to the Education Oversight Committee and is a trustee with South Carolina Public Charter School District. 
Brenan is President of BB&T of South Carolina responsible for banking operations in South Carolina.  In addition, he serves as a member of the Corporation's Government Affairs Task Force.   He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Bowling Green State University.  Prior to BB&T, Brenan was Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Mainstreet Financial Corporation in Virginia which was acquired by BB&T in 1999.   Brenan is married to Julie and has four children: Erin, Andrew, Rob and Molly.
